The Shastri Nagar village of 3000 has several hundred children who have never had the opportunity to attend school. DLS has started a makeshift school to at least start addressing the problem, however we are limited to one room (125 sq. ft.) with no windows and only a single door to let in light. Currently 45 children, aged 4–15 yrs, attend 1 of 2 shifts daily. They are all in grade one. When they are not at school they work. |

The Nesackkarangal orphanage in Tamil Naidu currently houses 85 children, ages from newborn to teen. The current facility is already desperately overcrowded but is the sole refuge and source of support for these children. And the situation is only getting worse as more and more children are found and placed there by police and social agencies. The number of children grew by 50% last year alone. |
